Kindergarten
During this school year our class will study the area listed below. Many of the subjects will be integrated in with other subject areas. Teaching styles will vary, as to student learning styles. My goal is to provide your child with the most enriched and full educational experience possible for them.
Religion
Subject Matter: God Love Creates the Universe, God Created Me, God Gives Me My Family, Jesus Loves Us, Jesus Teaches Us to Love Others
Liturgical Seasons- Advent, Christmas, Lent, Holy Week, Easter, All Saints, Valentine’s Day, Blessed Mother and Thanksgiving.
Expectations: daily participation, basic understanding of Sacraments, mass attendance, respect and tolerance of others.
Grading: daily oral and written participation, general discussion, and tests.
Safe Environment for Children
The Diocese of Oakland’s Safe Environment for Children Project was developed using the Guidelines for Safe Environment Programs from the United States Conference of Catholic Bishop’s Office of Child Youth Protection. These guidelines state that: “Training programs for children and young people should include age appropriate materials pertaining to personal safety. This includes information about improper touching and relationships. Children are not expected to be fully knowledgeable about child abuse or of the laws governing care of children but they need to know when they should seek assistance from a trusted adult.”
The Safe Environment for Children Project requires that a personal safety curriculum implemented for students in grades K through 12, in both Catholic schools and parish religious education programs.
Learning Objectives:
Prekindergarten – Grade Three
To raise children’s awareness that they are valued by God.
To raise children’s awareness around the issue of child safety and child abuse
To empower children so that they may feel comfortable saying “no” in a potentially abusive situation.
To help children see God as a source of comfort in their lives.
To help children understand child sexual abuse.
To help children identify trusted adults they can go to disclose situations in their lives that make them feel unsafe.
Reading Readiness
Subject Matter: Letter/sounds of the twenty-six alphabets each introduce in students workbook.
Expectations: daily participate, oral and written communication
Subject Matter: Literature, fantasy/reality, cause/effect, vocabulary, sequencing, main ideas, comprehension, grammar, phonics, listening skill and increase reading enjoyment and understanding of literature.
Grading: recognize letters and identify letters and sounds, listening and following oral directions.
Subject Matter: Phonics program where student will learn phonics and spelling along with reading readiness lessons.
Expectations: daily oral and written participation, mastery of skill as shown through daily performance, learn to apply specific rules taught in phonics and spelling in all subject areas.
Grading: daily participation, weekly spelling test
Handwriting: De’Nealian
Subject Matter: The correct basic formation of letters upper and lower case.
Expectations: Continue to strive for neatness, correct formation of letters.
Grading: based on written work and daily work in all subjects.
Social Studies: California Social Studies
Subject Matter: Off to School We Go, Homes, and Families, Around the Community and Going Places
Expectations: daily participation, written and oral participation, special projects.
Grading: daily performance and teacher observation of mastery of content through sharing knowledge, special projects, and tests.
Science: Harcourt Science
Subject Matter: Life Science, Earth Science, and Physical Science
Expectations: daily, oral participation, written and drawings of observations specific projects.
Grading: daily performance and teacher observation of mastery of content through sharing, special projects, and tests.
Mathematics: California Mathematics
Subject Matter: Sorting and classifying, Patterns, Numbers to 5, Shapes and Sharing, Numbers to 10, Measurement, Time and Money, problem-solving techniques with daily math problems and math drills
Expectations: appropriate use of vocabulary terms, use of manipulative, understanding of mathematical processes, and tests.
Grading: class participation, cooperative groups, teacher observation of demonstration of understanding of mathematical processes, and test.
Homework
Homework packet is sent home at the beginning of each week. Homework is done each night and due on Friday. This packet contains specific directions, which gives each student the opportunity to complete the assignments successfully. Daily Reading is also a part of homework, reading each night for a least 10- 15 minutes. The suggested time allotment for homework for Kindergarten to Second Grade is 20 – 30 minutes.
Class Work Packet
A packet of your child’s class work, and papers will be sent home every week. You will receive the packet on Wednesday. Please review your child’s work.
Assessment
Students will receive grades in most subject areas. Students are graded on tests, special projects, and class participation. Homework assignments do not always receive a grade but completion is counted towards your child’s daily effort
Birthdays
No Birthday celebrations, but students will be recognize with a special note. SEE Parent/Student Handbook.
Appointments:
If you would like to meet with me for any reason, please call the school office or send a note with your child. You may also leave a message on my voice mail. It would also be helpful to me if you indicate what your concerns are prior to our meeting so that I am prepared for our conference. I am here until 4:00 p.m. most days.

Extra Curriculum Activities
Faith Families
The Faith Family Project is a school wide program that involves the entire St. Leander Community. The students attend mass as a family and participate in-group activities throughout the school year. Each family is lead by an eight-grade student with at least one student from every grade including Kindergarten.
Art/Computers
The students will be taught twice a week learning
many lessons in art, painting, drawings, and other creative ways.
In the Computers the students will be introduce to many creative kid friendly programs.
PE/ Music
The Rhythm and Moves is taught will a learning age- appropriate songs and rhythms.
PE is also Rhythm and Moves the physical education program is taught twice a week. Small and large motor skills and good sportsmanship is taught throughout the school year.
