January’s CLEAR Focus: We Are Responsible Citizens
Dear Families,
We begin our very important celebration of Catholic Schools Week this Sunday! We will gather for Mass at 11:00 AM (students should wear their uniforms and follow all the uniform rules, please!) to represent our school and the long and wonderful tradition of Catholic education at St. Leander School.
Following Mass, please join us for Open House on both campuses! Our teachers and students would love to show off their work. Please stop by our Science Room (located on the top floor of the Main School building) to see the results of our Science Fair projects by our Middle School students. Don’t forget to check out the Book Faire in the Auditorium—there are wonderful books available for students and parents. Want another easy way to help St. Leander School? Round up your purchase at the Book Faire to the next dollar for a donation to our school.
We will be enjoying many special events during the week—please remember to RSVP to our Parent Appreciation Breakfast on Wednesday. Join us for coffee, treats, and some singing by our PreK and Kindergarten students!
Thank you for your support of St. Leander School. It is a blessing to work in partnership with you in support of our children and in the faith-filled tradition of Catholic education.
Have a great week!
Sincerely,
Lynne Kennedy Mullen
Principal

Many thanks to the parents who have volunteered to help at the Book Faire! We invite all parents to come to the Auditorium during Open House to purchase books. The Book Faire will also be open tomorrow and Friday after school, if we have enough parent volunteers. |

Safety
With the added tragedy of the killing of the Wehes’ dog last week by the hit-and-run driver in the red truck and two “near misses” on Davis Street and one on Carpentier and West Estudillo, I have written a letter to the Chief of the San Leandro Police and the City Manager (in addition to telephoned reports) requesting more proactive protection of our school staff and families. We are always vigilant about our students crossing the streets around our school, and we have been working on a plan placing teachers in strategic locations around the school building, but it seems to be an uphill battle, as cars whiz by and honk at other drivers who do slow down or stop for pedestrians (or curse at me, as in the case on Monday). I do not understand why there are no “Slow School Zone” signs on Davis Street on the block of our school, as there are at other schools. I requested more vigilance around our school and asked for police to ticket cars that are speeding around our school and not yielding to pedestrians. Please, please, everyone, be extra careful around school and if you see someone speeding or not yielding to pedestrians, try to get a description and the license plate number. The safety of every life, human and animal, in our community is precious to us. I am documenting every instance of danger to our community; so if you witness something illegal or unsafe, please send me a report to add to my documentation. Thank you for your vigilance and care.
ITBS Test Results
This week, parents of students in grades 2-8 who took the ITBS (Iowa Test of Basic Skills) in the fall will receive your child’s test results accompanied by a letter from our Assistant Superintendent. We are a little late sending them out because we have been working on our accreditation report and wanted the opportunity to discuss the scores as a staff before mailing them out. We are proud of our students’ achievements and will be using the test results to continue to monitor and improve instruction at St. Leander School.
